In a world where the "medical
model" of mental health treatment holds sway over the art
of healing, I, like many other practitioners, find a need for
a broader view. While helpful as one tool, the medical model,
in my opinion, does not go nearly far enough in supporting the
richness of human experience. This broader view of treatment that
informs my work, with both individuals and families, is most easily
described as "wholistic psychotherapy".
Wholistic psychotherapy
-
Is grounded in professional
standards of care
-
Treats the whole person
- body, mind and spirit - rather than a diagnosis
-
Considers that a person's
emotional well-being is related to their: relationships, work
environment, home, life experiences, overall health, family
history, social/historical context, religious/spiritual life,
natural environment, etc
-
Is committed to integrative
medicine as a way to provide the best possible care. Many of
my clients are also receiving naturopathic treatment, acupuncture,
chiropractic or medical treatment, and I enjoy collaborating
with their practitioners.
-
Supports the appropriate
use of medication, with recognition of its limitations, and
appreciation for the desire to be medication-free
-
May include effective,
innovative treatments, such as energy medicine, imagery work,
hypnosis, EMDR, and others, as appropriate
-
Recognizes that practitioners,
themselves, are part of the healing process; and holds practitioners
accountable for increasing their own awareness, integrity and
well-being
-
Recognizes that life
has profound mystery, and that practitioners are students of
life, constantly in the presence of what is only partially known
